Common Questions
China Travel FAQ for Foreigners
Do foreigners need a visa to visit China?
It depends on your passport. Many nationalities need a tourist (L) visa, while some qualify for visa-free entry or 240-hour transit. Check your eligibility before booking flights, then read our China visa guide or use the visa checker.
Can foreigners use Alipay or WeChat Pay in China?
Yes. Most foreign visitors can set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with an international card before or after arrival. Mobile payments are the default in cities, so set them up early and still carry a little cash as backup. See How to use Alipay and WeChat Pay for tourists.
Does Google Maps work in China?
Google Maps is unreliable in mainland China. Use Apple Maps, Amap (Gaode), Baidu Maps, or offline maps instead, and set up mobile data with an eSIM or roaming plan before you fly. Details: Google Maps in China.
How many days do you need for a first trip to China?
Seven days covers a classic Beijing–Xi'an–Shanghai loop at a fast pace. Ten to fourteen days is better if you want southwest China, Yunnan, or a less rushed itinerary. Start with our 7-day classic itinerary.
Do I need a VPN to travel in China?
Only if you need Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, Gmail, or similar Western services. Daily travel apps like Alipay, WeChat, DiDi, and Chinese maps work without a VPN. Install and test any VPN before you arrive — see Do you need a VPN in China?
Our Approach
We write for travelers who book their own hotels, figure out their own trains, and want answers to real problems — not another listicle of "top 10 temples." Every guide is built around what foreigners actually struggle with in China.
